For years, protein has been the star of the nutrition world. Protein shakes, high-protein snacks, and protein-packed meal plans have dominated supermarket shelves and social media feeds. But a new trend is emerging in the health and wellness space, fibre maxxing. Instead of focusing only on protein, more people are prioritising fibre-rich foods like oats, beans, vegetables, and whole grains to support gut health, improve fullness, and promote long-term wellbeing.

So, what exactly is fibre maxxing, and why is fibre suddenly getting so much attention?

What is fibre maxxing?

Fibre maxxing simply means intentionally increasing your daily fibre intake through real, whole foods rather than supplements or processed products. It focuses on eating foods like:

● Oats and whole grains

● Beans and lentils

● Fruits and vegetables

● Nuts and seeds

● Legumes and plant-based foods

The goal is not just to improve digestion, but to support the gut microbiome, improve satiety (feeling full), and reduce reliance on ultra-processed foods.

While protein is still important for muscle repair and overall health, fibre plays a different but equally critical role in keeping the body functioning well.

Fibre and the gut microbiome

One of the biggest reasons fibre is gaining attention is its impact on the gut microbiome, the trillions of bacteria living in our digestive system.

Fibre is unique because the human body cannot fully digest it. Instead, it travels to the large intestine where gut bacteria ferment it and produce beneficial compounds called short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). These compounds help reduce inflammation, support immune function, and maintain gut health (Kim et al., 2021; Rubert et al., 2024).

Research shows that dietary fibre is one of the most important nutrients for shaping the gut microbiota and supporting overall health. Different types of fibre feed different bacteria, which is why eating a variety of plant foods is recommended (Calatayud et al., 2021; So et al., 2023).

In simple terms, fibre feeds the good bacteria in your gut, and a healthy gut is linked to better digestion, stronger immunity, improved mood, and reduced risk of chronic disease.

Fibre helps you feel fuller for longer

Another major reason fibre is becoming popular is its role in satiety, the feeling of fullness after eating. Fibre slows down digestion, stabilises blood sugar levels, and keeps food in the stomach for longer. This helps reduce hunger and prevents overeating throughout the day (Rebello, O’Neil & Greenway, 2016). Different types of fibre work in different ways:

● Soluble fibre (found in oats, beans, and fruits) forms a gel in the gut and slows digestion

● Insoluble fibre (found in vegetables and whole grains) adds bulk and supports bowel movement

● Resistant starch (found in legumes and cooled potatoes or rice) feeds gut bacteria and improves fullness

Studies have shown that fibre-rich foods can naturally help regulate appetite by influencing hormones related to hunger and fullness (Clark & Slavin, 2013).

This is one reason dietitians often recommend focusing on fibre before increasing protein or cutting calories — because fibre helps people feel satisfied while still eating balanced meals.

Real food over supplements

A key part of fibre maxxing is getting fibre from real food rather than supplements.

Whole foods like oats, vegetables, and legumes provide more than just fibre. They also contain:

● Vitamins and minerals

● Antioxidants

● Plant compounds (phytonutrients)

● Natural carbohydrates and protein

These nutrients work together to support health in ways that isolated fibre supplements cannot (Kim et al., 2021).

For example, oats contain beta-glucan, which has been linked to improved satiety and cholesterol reduction, while beans provide both fibre and plant protein, making them a highly nutritious choice.

Fibre maxxing is therefore less about counting grams and more about building meals around plant-based whole foods.

Are we getting enough fibre?

Despite the benefits, most people do not eat enough fibre.

Adults are generally recommended to consume around 25–30 grams of fibre per day, yet many fall short due to high intake of processed foods and low consumption of vegetables and whole grains.

This is why the fibre maxxing trend is gaining traction it shifts the focus from restrictive dieting to adding more nourishing foods to the plate.

Instead of cutting foods out, fibre maxxing encourages people to:

● Add vegetables to every meal

● Swap white bread for whole grain options

● Include beans or lentils a few times per week

● Start the day with oats or high-fibre cereal

● Snack on fruit, nuts, or yogurt with seeds

This approach feels more sustainable and less restrictive than many traditional dieting methods.

The balance between protein and fibre

Fibre maxxing does not mean protein is no longer important. In fact, protein and fibre work best together. Protein supports muscle and tissue repair, while fibre supports digestion and fullness. Meals that contain both, such as lentil soup, Greek yogurt with berries and seeds, or oats with nuts tend to be more satisfying and nutritionally balanced.

The shift toward fibre maxxing simply reflects a broader understanding of nutrition: health is not about one nutrient, but about the overall quality and diversity of the diet.
